This project built and tested a two-stage benchtop bioreactor for efficient C1 gas utilisation to overcome the gas limitation due to bioreactor temperature. The intention was not to usurp industrial methods for the same but to enable biologists to work at the laboratory bench without being mass transfer-limited. The brief required a simple rig without expensive and technical engineering equipment.
The project was funded by C1Net and led by Professor Steve Wilkinson at the University of Chester’s Department of Chemical Engineering. Scruffy contributed an affordable water chiller unit, heater unit and Arduino-driven pump control unit.
