We operate a range of large, self-built airlift bioreactors. There’s nothing especially complicated about them. Our large 25L bioreactor cost less than £50 to build.

The 25L airlift reactor uses the momentum of rising gas to set up a circulation loop.

The reactors are essentially homebrew fermentation vessels with a central riser made from soil pipe, held in place with M8 stainless steel rod.

Heating is provided by a submersible 300W aquarium heater. The temperature holds steady at 34°C.

These reactors have been used to develop our Rapid Syn Bio projects, test aeration strategies, run flocculation trials, and lots of other projects. They’re not optimal in terms of yield, but for the money they’re difficult to beat.
